How To Love Your Job

Many people I know hate their job, and yet they stick to the daily grind. These days, though many are glad to even have a job. If you have to spend 8 hours a day at work, you might as well be doing something you like. I believe people need to find meaning in their life, people need to know that what they do matters. Of course, we have all been in situations where what is happening in the company doesn’t make sense. But what if I can show you how to love your job again?

I get bored with work too, whenever I have to do things that are routine. When the work is routine, problems tend to really stress you out. Imagine if you are having a bad day, how would it feel if you have another 364 days of the same? It might be time for a chance, and you don’t even if to quit your company.

1. Change Your Department
It’s time for a change of environment and a new challenge. With a new challenge, and the chance to learn something new, even the training will be rewarding. It might be a job that no one wants, but isn’t a dead end job. There have been times when I did what no one wanted to do, and then they wonder why I got a pay raise. I don’t mean to imply that it was easy, but sometimes you have to go the extra mile. Always deliver more than they expect doesn’t apply only to consumers.

2. Get Involved
Getting involved in the workplace can create new jobs, projects and new friends. The act of doing something constructive gives you a great boost. It motivates you, and get your juices flowing. Maybe you can sign up for a course, or ask to be assigned to a project. Your efforts will be appreciated.

Socially, it helps you to create a network of contacts, inside and outside the company. This can lead to better things in the future. Getting involve will help you find your passion, and it even allows you to help people. The point is there are many options available to you within a company, and rather than complaining about how things are going, get things going!

3. Be Productive
Getting things done always helps you feel good about yourself. You are active rather than reactive. The more you get done, the better you become. Self-development is what happens in the real world, where you find yourself meeting challenges head-on. It gets even better, the more experienced you become, the less problems you have. Your problem solving skills improve to the point where you can prevent problems from happening in the first place.

Focus on getting things done, one job at a time, one day at a time. It all adds up. It’s a great feeling to walk into a room and receive applause from your co-workers. Or in giving a speech that fires them up ready for the next project. It’s time to get your head in the game.

I am awake, energized and alive.

I focus on all the good things in life,
And give thanks for them,
I am at peace and one with everything,
I feel the love, the joy, the abundance.

I am magnificence in human form,
I am the perfection of life,
I am grateful to be me.

The Leadership Role

For those of you in the leadership position, often you are not appreciated enough for what you do. A leader, or a manager often provides motivation and drive for the organization. He is self-motivated, and when things go wrong, he finds the solution for the problem. The leader is in the spotlight, and what he says or does can make a difference in the business. He must be full of energy all the time, no matter what life throws at him. That is what being in the leadership position is about.

Contrary to misconceptions, being in the hot seat isn’t being able to take it easy. Although it can sometimes look that way. I remember when my assistant got promoted to take over my position in a previous company. In the early days, she would often call me up and we would go through what needs to be done at the business level. Something she said stuck with me all these years. She asked,” I did not imagine that there would be so much to do. There are so many things to take care of. Why did it seem so easy when you were doing it?”

The answer is we make it look easy, that is why we get paid the big bucks. We do the same job, get the same results but our methods are different. We keep our cool even when things look to be falling apart. Besides, how would it look if the management was running around all over the place with their hair on fire. That is unlikely to build trust and confidence.

Being the leader, you have to communicate and get your message across. Whether it is within the company or to the public. You are the voice of the business, and you speak on behalf of the company. It could be a meeting with your peers, or a presentation to the group management, you must be able to speak. Speaking in public to 300 people takes some getting used to.

Review Of 2009

It is Christmas morning, and I am spending it with my family. This happens seldom enough, and in between entertaining my little girls, I am taking a little time to write my thoughts. It is 6 days until 2010, so it is a good time for me to review how the past year went and what I would like to achieve in 2010.

A Year In Review
2009 has been a challenging year, both good and bad. If there is anything we can be sure of in life, it is this: Life does not stand still for anyone, and change happens.

  1. Started work in a new retail chainstore in January 2009, we went from a standing start to 8 outlets inside 12 months.
  2. My wife had an operation in January while I was setting up the first retail outlet, I would finish work at midnight and then spend the night at the hospital with my wife. Then get back to work at 6am, this went on for 3 nights until we were opened for business.
  3. At the outlet I managed, we were the first to achieve a million dollars in sales.
  4. Was appointed to oversee the installation of retail POS system for the group.
  5. In the midst of installation and providing training, my wife gave birth to our second child.
  6. Return to managing an outlet after project completion, and retained the number 1 sales position in the group.
  7. In December, returned to Head Office to head our ISO9001 project.

2009 has been an eventful year, having to juggle the time spent at work with the time spent with my family. I am sorry to say that I had less time to spend with my family this year, and while my angelic girls accept this, it does tears me up to not be able to be there for them.

What’s In Store For 2010
For the foreseeable future, I will continue to be in retail. When all is said and done, it remains what I do best. Retail is serving your customers, taking care of the people who work with you, and building a business. It is interesting, challenging and you get to experience new things on a regular basis. We never stop learning. But it takes up a lot of your time, especially when you are in operations.

The options available are to continue with this company, or start a new retail chain as a partner. In either case, retail it is. With this company, I would be working with people I have known for years, and continuing to improve the business. At the expense of time with my family. On the other hand, creating a new business promises to be just as challenging. I have been in business before, both worlds have their own unique set of problems and rewards. Personally, it does matter whether I work for someone, or have a stake in the business. I tend to look for challenges and love doing new things. So we will see what 2010 brings.

As for the internet, I only started to build wordpress websites in June of 2008. By using wordpress and keywords, manage to land on Google page 1 for most of my websites. Except for this site, where I revamp everything and thus lost my page 1. My first site ended up on page 1, no.1. Not too bad, huh? This is my current passion, creating and publishing websites. I will continue to build wordpress websites, either for myself or for paying clients.

So, once again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Starting Your Own Business

Sometime in your life, you will probably get tired of working for someone. I am sure many of us, at one time or another have felt this way. I know what it feels like. I have been on both side of the fence.

Working for some company does has its benefits. Medical care, insurance, investment or retirement funds. The paycheck is a source of stable income. Hey, some of us get paid for doing nothing, all day, every day of the week. There are other perks, like a company car, expenses account, traveling and an assistant. Even the prestige of working for a well-known and respected company.

But for some of us, trading time for money is not the way to go. Maybe you need to spend more time with your family. Sometimes, it is because you do not agree with the way things are done, and it can be a soul-numbing experience. In my case, sometimes I work a 70 hour week, even a 20 hour day. I have a toddler and a baby at home, so it can be challenging to manage my time.

It is in trying times that you start looking for greener pastures. Taking a pay-cut in another job with flexible hours might work. Or you might want to be your own boss. Before you make the choice, I really do think you need to look at your plans objectively. Many people make the change from being employed to being self-employed. Unless you have something that you can offer your customers, this is a risky proposition.

The problem with being self-employed is that you end up working even longer hours trying to build a business. You have to do everything yourself, and the minute you stop working, the income dries up. In many cases, being self-employed is an inefficient use of your time because you have to do everything yourself.

Even if you manage everything properly, it can take years before it can be self-sustaining. In that time, you work horribly long hours and your family life suffers as a consequence. Starting a business is quite a simple matter, making it successful so you work less is another matter altogether.

The solution depends on a lot of factors, starting with being realistic and objective. Here are 5 things you need to consider before venturing out on your own:

1) Know The Market
Determine if there is a need or want in the marketplace for what you have to offer. Go out and talk to people in your market, get hard data. You need to offer something to the market that other business do not, your Unique Selling Proposition or Unique Selling Point. What is it that you can do for your market, and do it better or more effectively?

2) Get The Income Now
You need to get some paying clients or customers now, before you quit your job. If your business model does not work or if people do not want to do business with you, how are you going to generate income? Why should they do business with you? This is the ultimate test, if you cannot generate income now, what do think your chances of success is going to be?

3) Seek Additional Finances
You may some money put aside that can sustain you for a few months. But it is never to early to start seeking additional funds to drive your business. Even if you manage your cash-flow well, working capital is seldom sufficient for growth. You need to find additional resources quickly.

4) Look For Business Partners
Your business needs to grow to succeed. Look for businesses you can partner or joint-venture with. Something that is a strategic fit which you can use to build up your client base. Perhaps you can do a joint promotion, and they can extend your reach into your target market.

5) Seek Expertise
You don’t know everything, and you cannot be expect to know or do everything. There is always someone to turn to when you need expert knowledge. In one of my enterprises, we have a consultant who advises our company in financial matters. Spending that small amount of money up-front allows the company to keep a bigger share of the profits. You could find a mentor or an advisor, someone who is successful in business.
