Is Your Website's Navigation As Intuitive As It Ought to Be?

By Lynette Chandler

In "Don't Make Me Think", Steve Krug starts the book off by stating the most important thing to make sure a web site is easy to use is... not to make people think.

While there are many areas where a website can be structured to create a great user experience, navigation plays a crucial role and rightly so.

Review these elements and see if you're on the right path to a better navigation.

1. Placement

People expect navigation links to be on the top or running down the side of the page. They can accept a little variation like having the navigation above, to the side or under your logo. They can even accept it being a combo of both top and side navigation especially if you have a lot of different categories or sub-topics. Just don't make people hunt around for it or play hide and seek with images to get to it.

Part of placement is being able to recognize navigational links. Watch that it doesn't blend so well into your design that people have to wonder if those are navigational links.

2. Constancy

Once people see and use your navigation, they are going to expect it will be in the same place with similar design and options. Small changes like having a new sub-navigation in each category are OK.

However, don't move it entirely or completely change the look and feel of the navigation from page to page or section to section.

3. Service Links

Other things people expect are links to Help, Cart, About, Contact, Login, Home. Give it to them. Up top, clear and visible.

Once, we had a site design where the "Support" links is at the bottom. We'd get people telling us they can't find a way to contact us or get help because there were no support links on the site. They were there of course but people simply didn't see it. Needless to say we switched and now all our Service Links are the top, clearly defined.

4. Where Am I?

Good navigation should in some way communicate where visitors are in your site. This gives people some sense of direction.

You can do this in a variety of different ways using breadcrumbs, different colors, bullets, icons and clever design that make your navigation tab appear to pop out on the current page or category.

5. Search

While this is not part of a navigation menu - although it could be. Some visitors are search happy and would almost always search first navigate later. Also, when they still can't find what they want using your navigation, the search option for them to fall back on.

If your navigation menu has room for it, integrate search in it. Otherwise, find a high visibility spot for it.

Finally, don't forget to listen to what people are telling you (or complaining about). If people can't find what they are looking for on a regular basis, something is wrong.

Internet For Local Business

Are You A Web Developer?

I get ask this a lot, and very often it is easier to say yes than to explain what I do. The truth is, I put local businesses in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on the internet, get them to rank on the 1st page for their industry and put them on Google Maps.

Very often, web developers or web designers have little credibility in the eyes of business owners. It is all very well knowing how to create a website, but how do you use that website as a marketing channel? Perhaps it is because most web designers they meet are in their 20s, and have no business experience.

My Professional Career

1) I'm a 20 year veteran in the Retail industry. Having traveled all over the Sabah, Malaysia, in the largest retail chain in the State. I have managed multi-million dollar business units, managing close to 100 employees, and I answer to the Board of Directors for my business. When I'm not managing a retail unit, I manage the MIS dept, write training and operation manuals for the company, conduct field training, oversee stock-take, and get involve in business units throughout the state.

2) In my last company, I was responsible for the ISO9001:2008 documentation. In most companies, I tend to be the one who handles documentation, creating manuals and IT work. This is in addition to running business units.

3) I have worked with a few of the larger retail groups in my State. In the areas of Operations, Management and IT. The last company I worked with was a subsidiary of a public-listed company. I was involved in the start of operations from day one, when we set up the first store. By the time I left, we were approaching 100 million in sales per year.

4) Although not an IT person, I have managed the MIS departmentt for 2 of the largest companies in the State. Sometimes I wonder how I got involved in IT in the first place. I have always treated it as project management, and by taking crash courses in what I needed to know.

5) From time to time, I get involved in other businesses, either playing a role in consultation or setup of the company.

What I Have Found Out

There is a large difference in the way small and large businesses are managed and operated. Having worked in large corporations for most of my career, I am more familiar and at home in a large business. You would think things happen slower in a large corporation - this is not the case. When we need something done, it is the speed of implementation and the effectiveness of the action that we are interested in. There is no place for shoddy work, unprofessional conduct and outright incompetence.

I understand that in many cases, small business owners have to be resourceful and have to do most of the work themselves. Typically, they are the one who is best suited to the job at hand. This means they have to be Superman or Superwoman. The job will be done right but this is always at the expense of something else. As a business owner, regardless of your size, you need systems to run your business and you need professionals.

How Did I Get Involve In Websites?

This started out from a desire to learn more about how the online business model worked. The more I learnt, the more passionate I became. Simply put, your customers are already online in one form or another. They are connected to the internet where they work, on their cellphones and when they are at home. Your business need to be found wherever your prospects are. It is that simple.

In addition to running niche websites, I help local business establish their online presence. Putting up a website is the least of it, it is also about writing about your products and services, using photos and videos to showcase your business. It is also about being on social networks to put a face on your company. What you do online is almost what you do offline in your business. Advertising, Marketing, Customer Service, Connecting with prospects, do all that and the sale should follow.

What About Branding?

You know those free websites available. Can you imagine what would happen if I were to go to the GM or CEO and tell them, "Hey, I can get us a free website at ourcompany.webs.com!" ? I don't think they will even bother to discuss it with me. If I spoke about free hosting, I think they would wonder why they even hired me in the first place.

Yes, free is attractive. But branding is even more attractive, don't you think? What's your brand worth? Even if you are a small business, what's your brand worth? Get working on it and build value into your brand!

One Last Word

If you want to build a website for your company, make sure you control the domain name, web hosting and the website.

1) The domain name should registered in your name, and you can easily check this.
2) Your website should have its own web hosting. Verify this.
3) You need the web hosting username and password. This is how you can access your website.
4) Make sure you know what you are buying. A website should be treated as your company asset. You must maintain control of it at all times.

Why WordPress Is The Most Popular Choice

I use wordpress to design and create business websites for my clients. Now, most people have no idea what wordpress is, to them a website is a website. They look similar to each other and they function pretty much the same way.

Some express surprise when told it is the most popular blog platform on the internet. They want a website not a blog. Then you pretty much lose them when you mention that wordpress can be used as a content management system (CMS).

Basically, wordpress can be set up to look like a html or css website. You can use pages instead of the post and category function in wordpress. But what gets the best results is to set up your static information on pages and then use the post function in the form of articles, promotions, product reviews and so forth.

One. It gets you better results on the search engines for your keyword phrases. It also tells the search engines how active your website is.

Two. It is easy for the client to maintain and update their websites by using the post function. if you can use email, you can write a post on wordpress.

Tadika Sabah Website

Having a business website can increase awareness of your products and services

In this case study, I will show you how a business website can help your business connect to your prospects.

The primary objective of this website is to connect with potential clients on the internet, and to act as a communication channel to the parents of this kindergarten.

Prior to this, Tadika Sri Kandi had no internet presence, but the owner could see the potential of having a website. The owner contacted me and we discussed how a website can create awareness for your business. We wanted to keep it simple, while at the same time to get results from the website.

Keywords
All projects start with keyword research. We have to identify what are the keywords that are used in this particular industry. We look at the number of searches per month, and collected the keywords that were relevant.

Search Engine
Then we look at the number of websites for these keywords in our local search engine results, looking at the placement of existing websites, pagerank, links and so forth. This lets me know what I have to do to ensure my client's website will rank well for local search.

Domain Name
Once we know the keywords and search engine competition, I will come up with a list of domain names that includes the company name, or a generic name, or a combination. In this case, I could not use their business name, Tadika Sri Kandi. They managed a few kindergartens in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, including Tadika Permai Ria.

So I proposed the domain, www.tadikasabah.com, which will give us a head-start as this is the equivalent of Kindergarten Sabah. in one move, we commanded the keyword for tadika in Sabah.

Search Engine Optimization
Creating the contents using our list of keywords, as well as the company name made sure we ranked in the first position of the search engines. With the addition of videos, articles and social marketing we had a strong start.

The Launch Of The Website

We launched their website during their annual concert and graduation ceremony, with the Minister of Industry, Plantation and Commodity, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok in attendance. As well as representatives of the Education department and the Kindergarten Association.

After The Launch

After the launch, we followed up with the kindergarten's Facebook Page. This enabled us to connect to friends, families and parents of the students of Tadika Sri Kandi. This gives us an additional channel to promote the kindergarten and to let people know the type of activities in the school. It also allows prospects to connect with the teachers personally.

As you know, if your business can build connections with your prospects and existing customers, you have a strong competitive advantage. Facebook provides an easy communication channel that is interactive, and lets you incorporate other social media sites together. Used properly, this is a very powerful marketing tool.

The Results

1) We can see that the website, www.tadikasabah.com has regular monthly traffic.
2) We can see that registration forms are downloaded from the website.
3) We have had friends on Facebook register their child into the kindergarten.
4) We have had potential teachers approach the school to offer their services.

So my client is pleased with the results. A website gives a kindergarten prestige and adds to their business branding. They now have advertising and communication channels that work for them through word of mouth.

The Return On Investment

The addition of a few new customers may not sound like much, but when you start calculating the lifetime value of the customers, that adds up to more than 5,000 dollars a year per new customer. Acquisition cost per customer is virtually nil.

Online Marketing Channel

This is a presentation of using your company website as an Online Marketing Channel. Your website can be used as an effective advertising and communication channel to connect with your prospects.

Company Website
Your website introduces your company, brand, products and services to your prospects. It allows you to keep in touch with your existing customers by using your website as a company newsletter. You can place your company news, new product launches, events and activities, as well as your promotions on your website.

Corporate blogging is also an effective communication channel to potential investors, business partners and potential clients. Corporate blogging gives your target audience an insight into how your company works, and to see if it will be a good strategic or operational fit.

Search Engines
No matter where your company is located, it is essential that you rank well on the search engines, such as Google and Yahoo. A large number of potential customers are already on the internet, and you need to go where your customers are.

It has been my experience that a lot of large companies start their search for vendors and suppliers on the internet. I have worked with companies that did over RM100 million in annual sales, and that is how it is.

Social Media
On the more popular social media sites, there are close to 500 million members or more. Everyone, from large businesses to small businesses have a presence on social media websites. Social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube are all mainstrem media channels now.

If you do not have an internet presence, you are missing out on a competitive advantage.

What Must Your Website Do

Your Business Website Only Has To Do One Thing

Many business owners tend to complicate things when it comes to business systems and websites. It doesn't have to be complicated. A website only has to do one thing and do it well. It only has to communicate to your prospects and customers.

Communications is the key to marketing. You can only sell your products and services when you can get in touch with your target market. Get it straight, Sales or Selling is not marketing, it is a result of marketing. When marketing is relevant to your prospects, sales is the natural course of action. Or so it should it be. Marketing is solving a problem, sales is price points and features - giving customers more bang for their buck.

What Your Website Has To Do

Your website has to communicate the main benefit people get when you choose to do business with you. That is all it has to do. These are the issues your prospects are most concerned with:
  1. What problem does it solves?
  2. How benefits do you get?
  3. How much will you save?
Your website does not necessary have to maintain a service database, or track individual units sold. Most businesses already have a database of customers, you don't need to migrate the database to the internet. It complicates things, additional infrastructure, additional skill set and manpower.

Your website introduces your company to your prospects

  1. Present them with relevant information on how you can make things better for them.
  2. Allows them to communicate with you, either by telephone or email, or by posting a comment.
  3. Captures their contact information so you can follow up with them.
Keep it simple. In the next post, we will discuss the importance of search engine rankings and social marketing.
